Workaversary

Today marks the day I walked into JBH for my first day of orientation. No more funemployment.

In the span of this one year, I have worked with great and not so great interdisciplinary members, had pleasant patients and also, not so pleasant patients. I have been smacked at, grabbed at, and verbally abused. I have laughed with my patients, and I have cried because of my patients. Days sometimes feel like nights, and nights sometimes feel like days. Half the time I don't even know what day it is and weekends have no significance. And to sum it all up, I have seen 4 deaths.

I always wonder if this profession is the right one for me. Do I like nursing? Sureeee. Can I do it? I guess so. It's only when patients verbalize their appreciation and gratitude that I remember, "hey, I'm making a difference in their lives. I'm gonna keep at it."

If we talk, I've probably shared a few nursing experiences with you. I've probably become desensitized in a way...talking about BMs, disempacting, wounds or catheters like it's normal table talk. When I'm with my mom and bro, it IS normal table talk. One time during dim sum all we talked about were laxatives and everything that comes with them.

Do I feel like I have this nursing stuff down pat? No way. Every day before a shift I have a feeling of anxiety, anticipating what the day/night will bring.

One thing for sure is that I am thankful and blessed to have this job. It's easy to get trapped into the complaints and stresses of nursing but I thank our God for what He has given me.
